The Blue Man Group is a creative organization known for its hilarious, visually stunning performances featuring three enigmatic bald and blue characters who take the audience through a multi-sensory experience. People from all over the world, from all walks of life and from all age groups have become fans of Blue Man Group's show.
The Blue Man Group was founded in 1987 where they first made waves in the underground performance art scene in New York City. In Early 1991, The Blue Man Group premiered "Tubes" at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Club on the Lower East side of New York City. The combination of theatre production, concert, and sketch comedy was a hit, and by the end of the year they had moved to the Astor Place Theatre. They won the Village Voice OBIE Award (Off-Broadway Theatre's highest honor) for the year of 1990-91.
The Blue Man group opened at the Luxor in Las Vegas at the beginning of the year 2000. The show has grown in reputation since its inception. The show has now moved to the Venetian with a custom bigger theatre with more seating. The new show in the Venatian features a number of the new musical instruments including Back Pack Tubulums (pronounced "tube-you-lums"), Airpoles and the three-story high Drum Wall.
Las Vegas is famous for its extravagant shows, and the Blue man group has opened its most lavish production ever to rave reviews, in The Venetian's brand-new 1760-seat Blue Man theatre built especially for this spectacular show.
The Blue men open the show by drumming paint onto a blank canvas. They can make art out of anything - a mouthful of melted marshmallows, half a gumball, an audience member. These unconventional acts put "Blue Man Group" in its own special niche.
The Blue Men leave their imprint on every segment, from their curious mannerisms to their playful mimicking. It's like watching a child explore the world for the first time, full of wonder and amazement, taking nothing for granted, leaving no stone unturned.
All areas in the theater have their own special appeal; the middle section offers a great overview of the stage, and patrons in the back sections are the first to experience a truly unexpected ending. The blue men venture into the audience at several points during the show, so don't worry if you're in the balcony seats , you'll still get an up-close and personal interaction.
Even more unusual than the Blue Men's actions are the improvised tools they use. 2" PVC pipes are cut to exact lengths and the Blue Man plays the instrument by striking one of the open ends with a closed-cell foam rubber paddle.
The Tubulum is a 4" PVC pipe and has cardboard "reeds" on the end that are struck with drumsticks.
Hollow fiberglass boat antennae of various lengths are sharply swung to create a "swoosh" sound.
There are a number of different themes found in various Blue Man performances. These themes include:
--Information overload and information pollution, such as when the audience is asked to choose one of three simultaneous streams of information to read.
--Innocence, as when the Blue Men appear to be surprised by common artifacts of modern society
--Self-conscious and naïve imitation of cultural norms, such as attempting to stage an elegant dinner for an audience member with Twinkies; .
--Rooftops, or otherwise climbing to the top. There are a number of references, both in visual pieces and in lyrics.
